MakesInnovation in Cancer Treatments Possible

There鈥檚 a surprising new cancer treatment that鈥檚 joined the ranks of radiation and chemotherapy: Exercise.

Pitt researcher Kathryn Schmitz is a leader in this field, with a ground-breaking body of work showing that exercise for breast cancer patients can help prevent some side effects.

Now, her goal is to make exercise part of the standard treatment for cancer. She is leading three large clinical trials in this area. One is looking at whether physical activity could aid in the treatment of cancer, while another is testing whether exercise might help older breast cancer patients handle treatments better.

The last aims specifically to increase physical activity in rural primary care patients, for the purpose of cancer prevention.
